The Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards are pleased to announce its Diversity Mandate and new award.
Diversity and inclusion means nourishing the values of empathy, reciprocity, compassion and responsibility, all while empowering the voices of those who have been historically silenced.
The Jessies acknowledge the existence of barriers and take active steps to address the changing needs of the community. Diversity sparks possibilities through willingness and the spirit of openness. The Jessies lead by taking risks to create opportunities for its members and the community at large. We invite members to be open, seek clarity and take on responsibility of leadership.
When we empower each other, we connect courage with gratitude; this connection nourishes a truthful voice.
We are committed to fostering a safe and respectful community in which everyone benefits from a sense of belonging wherein our diverse experiences are validated, and from that, grow a resilient community.
In the pursuit of equality and accessibility, our job is to actively listen to, see and acknowledge the marginalized, tear down all barriers, and embody inclusion in everything we do.
Vancouver Now Representation and Inclusion Award
Awarded to an individual, company, production or initiative who/that has made an outstanding contribution to the professional theatre community in representing Greater Vancouver as it is NOW. The work of a nominee should be as inclusive as possible, prioritizing the intersections of race, gender, ability, sexual orientation, gender identity, and age, and acknowledging current demographics in which women and persons of colour represent more than 50% of the population, respectively.
Nominations will be accepted all year long via online form (below), and the deadline is April 30th annually. Jessie Awards. Candidates may self-nominate, and those with accessibility issues to filling in an online form are invited to contact the committee (firstname.lastname@example.org) to arrange for an alternate method of submission.
To avoid conflict of interest (perceived or real), the sitting members of the Jessies Diversity and Inclusion Committee cannot be nominated for the award. This includes nominations for companies, productions, or initiatives where a committee member(s) held a position(s) of leadership and/or had direct influence over material decisions.
